Fruit - raw or cooked[1][2][3]. Aromatic with a taste like the sweetwater grape[4][5]. The fruit is up to 20mm long and 15mm wide, it contains one seed[6]. Seed[4][7]. No more details are given.

Propagation

Seed - it can be sown at any time of the year in a sandy soil in a greenhouse[8]. It can take 18 months to germinate[6]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.

Cultivation

Thrives in any good soil, including chalk[4][7]. Requires a sheltered position[4].

A very ornamental plant[8], but it is in general very slow growing in Britain[4][7], though slightly faster in the south-west[10]. Plants are usually dioecious though monoecious forms are known. Male and female plants must be grown if seed and fruit are required.

The fruits are fragrant[5].
