Propagation
Inter-nodal cuttings of greenwood, 5 - 8cm long, May/June in a frame. Quick and easy, a high percentage take[78, K]. Overwinter in the greenhouse for the first year and plant out after the last expected frosts. Inter-nodal cuttings of half-ripe wood, July/August in a frame. Very quick and easy, treat as greenwood cuttings above[K].
Cuttings usually succeed at any time during the growing season[K].Practical Plants is currently lacking information on propagation instructions of Fuchsia splendens. Help us fill in the blanks! Edit this page to add your knowledge.
Cultivation
This species is only hardy in the mildest parts of Britain, doing well in Cornwall and S. Devon[3][2]. A plant at Trengwainton in Cornwall growing out of a shady wall was about 2 metres tall and fruiting heavily in early August 1995[K]. Plants can be cut back to the ground by even quite light frosts but they usually recover well, resprouting from the base in late spring[K]. Plants require greenhouse protection in most parts of Britain[5]. Plants are very susceptible to whitefly[6].
Plants seem to be immune to the predations of rabbits[7].Crops
