Botanical description

A fairly prostrate evergreen Asian shrub, the Chinese bramble grows at least 60cm (2') high and spreads up to 2m (6'6") per year. It can get higher as it arches over itself and/or other shrubs. [6]: 206. It lives on steep banks and in scrub on mountains to 3000 metres as well as slopes, forests and thickets at elevations of 1800 - 3600 metres in Sichuan and Yunnan.

Ecological Functions

Ground cover

'It is too vigorous for small gardens but makes a great cover for larger areas [and] tolerates foot traffic [....] Maintenance consists of two jobs: 1) keeping the cover low enough to enable easy passage of foot traffic [...] and 2) stopping it spreading further than you want.' [6]: 206. It's a good vigorous groundcover plant for sun or shade. [2][8][9]

Propagation

Seed - requires stratification, is best sown in early autumn in a cold frame. Sow stored seed as early as possible in the year in a cold frame and stratify for a month at 3°c if sowing later than February. Prick out the seedlings when they are large enough to handle and grow on in a cold frame. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring of the following year.

Tip layering in July. Plant out in autumn. Division in early spring.

This vigorous plant spreads well and is most easily propagated through tip layering and division.

Seed

Cultivation

Easily grown in a good well-drained loamy soil in sun or semi-shade[1][2][8]. Plants grow best in part or full shade[10] and also succeed in dry shade[11]. Established plants are fairly drought tolerant[11].

Hardy to about -15°c[12]. Plants are evergreen but may be deciduous in severe winters[4].

A fast growing plant, the stems can grow by up to 2 metres per year[12][11]. It grows strongly but requires weeding for the first year or so[13]. New roots are formed at intervals along the stem[4]. It can swamp smaller plants but works very well in combination with trees and tall plants.
