The leaves and the roots are depurative, diuretic and febrifuge[2][3].They are used in the treatment of abscesses, boils, sore throat etc[3][1].

The roots are used externally as a poultice and internally as a heart and nerve tonic[1].

The plant shows cardiac activity, rather like digitoxin (in Digitalis purpurea)[1].

Propagation

Seed - best sown in a greenhouse as soon as it is ripe[4]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division.
The seed is best sown when it is very red and ripe. Although some growers use a stratification period I have had luck sowing fresh, ripe seed as soon as harvested. I harvested seed from a variegated

cultivar in a seed starting mix and germination took about 30 days. The plants grew to a height of 5 inches in a year in 4 inch pots. They will be planted out this season 2014.

Cultivation

Prefers a position in semi-shade in a moderately fertile humus-rich and moisture-retentive soil[4]. Plants are not particular as to the soil type[5].
