Hardy to about -20°c[9]. Plants come into growth very early in the year[9]. The branches are decumbent or spreading[8]. Plants can harbour a stage of 'white pine blister rust', so they should not be grown in the vicinity of pine trees[15]. Plants in this genus are notably susceptible to honey fungus[9].
