Seed - surface sow as soon as it is ripe in a greenhouse[2]. Do not let the pots dry out and give artificial light during the winter. The seed can also be surface sown in spring. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring.

Cultivation

Succeeds in a shady crevice of a cool rock garden in a humus-rich well-drained acidic soil[2][3]. This species is not quite hardy when grown outdoors in Britain and is best grown in the alpine house or with some protection when grown outdoors[2][3]. A pane of glass to cover the plant is probably sufficient[2].
