Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a cold frame[6]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.

Division of roots in the spring as soon as new growth commences[1][7]. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 10cm at a node or preferably with a heel, singly in pots of sand[1]. Fair to good percentage[7].

Layering in September/October. Takes 6 months. High percentage[7].

Cultivation

Easily grown in any fertile soil in a sunny position[1][2]. Succeeds in sandy soils[6].

A very ornamental plant, it is hardy in most parts of Britain[8]. A climbing plant that supports itself by twining around other plants etc[2][9]. Plants do not normally require pruning[9].

The powerful scent of the flowers is considered to be unpleasant by some people[6] and pleasant by others[10].
